Eight racks.
No mirrors.
No contracts.

Northside Barbell Club is an independent strength gym on Holton Street in Milwaukee. Coached classes six days a week, and open gym hours for when you would rather train alone.

A lifter in gloves and wrist wraps grips a barbell loaded with black bumper plates, about to pull it from a rubber tile floor.

The week on the whiteboard

Classes run an hour and stop at twelve people. Each colour is one kind of session, the same way each colour on the bar is one weight. Pick a colour to find yours.

Your first week, in order

  1. Come for a week, free

Any class on the timetable, as many as you like. Bring flat shoes and a water bottle. That is the whole kit list.

  2. A coach checks how you move

Fifteen minutes before your first class: a squat, a hinge and a press with an empty bar. There is nothing to pass. It tells us where to start you.

  3. Start in the right place

If you have not lifted before, that is the beginners' course: four weeks, three sessions a week, the same small group. If you have, you go straight into classes.

What is in the room

About 4,000 square feet of rubber floor in a former print shop. The plates are colour-coded, so you can read what is on a bar from the other side of the room.

Reading from the inside out: 25, 20, 15 and 10 a side, a 20 kg bar and a pair of collars. That is 165 kg.
