Alder Street Dental (509) 555-0138 Book a visit

We tell you what will happen before we do it.

A small family dental practice on Alder Street in Spokane, with two dentists and three hygienists.

New patients are welcome. If you have a toothache, call in the morning and we will see you the same day when a slot is open.

A bright treatment room with a white dental chair, an overhead light on a long arm, pale cabinets and a wood floor.
Room 2, where most checkups happen.

What brings you in?

Pick the closest reason. You will see what the visit involves, how long it usually takes and what it typically costs without insurance.

Reason for your visit

Checkup and cleaning

A hygienist cleans and polishes your teeth and checks your gums. One of the dentists then looks over your teeth and any X-rays and tells you what they see. If something needs doing, you get a written estimate before you decide.

Usually takes

Toothache

Call us when we open and we will tell you whether a same-day slot is free. The dentist looks at the tooth, usually takes one X-ray and explains what seems to be causing the pain. We talk through the options and the cost before any treatment starts.

30 minutes
Typical fee without insurance

Chipped or broken tooth

We look at the tooth and tell you whether it can be smoothed, filled or would need a crown. Small chips can often be repaired at the same visit if there is time. Larger repairs are booked separately, with a written estimate first.

My child's first visit

A short, unhurried visit. Your child can sit in the chair or on your lap while we count their teeth and show them the mirror and the water sprayer. If they would rather not open up that day, that is fine and we try again next time.

Usually takes
30 minutes
Typical fee without insurance
$85

Whitening

We check your teeth and gums first, because whitening is not suitable for everyone. If it is, we take moulds for take-home trays and show you how to use them. Results vary from person to person, and fillings and crowns do not change colour.

First appointment usually takes
40 minutes
Typical fee without insurance
$280 to $350

Nervous about the dentist

Start with a talk. You sit down with one of the dentists in an ordinary chair, not the dental one, and tell us what worries you. Nothing is done at this visit unless you ask, and we agree a stop signal before you book anything else.

Usually takes
20 minutes

No charge for the talk

Fees and insurance, in plain words

These are our usual fees if you are paying yourself. The range depends on how much work the tooth needs, and we tell you where you are likely to fall once we have looked.

We will give you a written estimate before any treatment.

We work with most dental insurance plans. Give us your plan details when you book and we will check what it covers before your visit, so you know your share ahead of time.

No insurance? You can pay by card or cash on the day. For larger treatment, ask us about spreading the cost over a few visits.

Checkup and cleaning, child$85 to $130

Tooth-coloured filling$180 to $320

If you are nervous

Plenty of people are, and plenty of them have not been for years. You do not need to explain or apologise. Tell us when you book and we will plan the visit around it.

We cannot promise you will feel nothing. We can promise you will know what is coming, and that you are the one who decides whether we carry on.

Book a talk first
  • Raise a hand and we stop.

At any point, for any reason. We take the tools out, sit you up and wait until you are ready, or finish another day.

  • We explain before we do anything.

What it is, why we suggest it, roughly how long it takes and what you are likely to feel. Then we ask if you want to go ahead.

  • Numbing is discussed first.

We talk through the numbing options for your treatment and you choose. Most people find the wait for it to work is the longest part.

The waiting area: a row of black moulded chairs with wooden legs against a white wall, beside an olive tree in a stone pot.
The waiting room. First visits start here, not in the chair.

Children

We see children of any age, including babies with their first teeth. Dr. Nakamura sees most of our younger patients.

First visits are short and mostly about getting used to the room. We use ordinary words, show each tool before it goes near a mouth, and a parent is welcome to stay the whole time.

Worth bringing: a favourite toy, any forms we sent you and your insurance card if you have one.

Who you will see

Dr. Brooks

Dentist

Tends to do the longer appointments: crowns, extractions and replacing old fillings. Also sees most of our toothache visits, so if you call in pain there is a fair chance you will meet Dr. Brooks first.

Dr. Nakamura

Dentist

Sees most of our children and many of our nervous patients. Does checkups, fillings and whitening, and is usually the one in on the Saturdays we open.

The hygiene team

Three hygienists

They do the cleaning part of your checkup, measure your gums, take X-rays and show you where your brush is missing. You will usually see the same hygienist each time, and you can ask for it.

Hours

Friday8:00 am to 2:00 pm
Some Saturdays9:00 am to 1:00 pm
SundayClosed

We open about two Saturdays a month. Ask when you call and we will tell you the next one.

During opening hours, call (509) 555-0138. We will see you the same day if a slot is open, and tell you honestly if one is not.

Go to an emergency room or call 911 if you have severe swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that will not stop.

Ask for a visit

Send us your details and we will phone you back to agree a time, usually within one working day.
