Which light is on?

Pick the one on your dash. Here is what it means and what to do.

Check engine light

What it means
The engine computer has logged a fault. It can be as small as a loose fuel cap or as real as a misfire. The light alone does not say which.
Keep driving?
Fine to drive, book it in this week
That is for a steady light. If it is flashing, ease off, pull over when it is safe and call us.
What we check first
We read the stored codes and live data, then test the part the code points at before replacing anything.
Cost to diagnose
$95 scan and diagnosis, credited toward the repair.

Oil pressure light

What it means
The engine may not be getting the oil pressure it needs. Running like that can wreck an engine quickly, so treat it as real until proven otherwise.
Keep driving?
Stop and call us, do not drive
Pull over and switch the engine off when it is safe to do so. Do not restart it to see if the light goes away.
What we check first
Oil level and leaks, then the actual pressure with a mechanical gauge, then the sensor and its wiring.
Cost to diagnose
$95 oil pressure test, credited toward the repair.

Battery light

What it means
The battery is not being charged. The car is running on what is left in the battery and will stop when that runs out.
Keep driving?
Drive gently and come in soon
Switch off what you do not need and head somewhere safe to stop. It may not restart. If the steering goes heavy or the temperature climbs, pull over when it is safe and switch off.
What we check first
Drive belt, battery terminals and charging voltage, then the alternator itself.
Cost to diagnose
$65 charging system test, credited toward the repair.

Coolant temperature light

What it means
The engine is running hotter than it should. Driving on can warp parts that are expensive to put right.
Keep driving?
Stop and call us, do not drive
Pull over and switch the engine off when it is safe to do so. Leave the radiator cap alone while it is hot.
What we check first
Coolant level and visible leaks, a pressure test of the system, then the fans and thermostat.
Cost to diagnose
$95 cooling system pressure test, credited toward the repair.

Tyre pressure light

What it means
One or more tyres is lower than it should be. Often a slow leak or a cold morning, sometimes a nail.
Keep driving?
Drive gently and come in soon
Look at all four at the next safe spot. If one looks flat, do not drive on it.
What we check first
We set all four pressures, then look for a nail, a leaking valve or a tired sensor.
Cost to diagnose
$0 to check and set pressures. A puncture repair is $30.

ABS light

What it means
The anti-lock system has switched itself off. The ordinary brakes usually still work, but the wheels can lock in a hard stop.
Keep driving?
Drive gently and come in soon
Leave more room than usual. If a red brake light is on as well, or the pedal feels different, stop and call us.
What we check first
Stored codes, then the wheel speed sensors and their wiring, which is where it usually is.
Cost to diagnose
$95 ABS scan and diagnosis, credited toward the repair.

What you pay for, and what we stand behind

No shop supplies line, no surprise fees. The part numbers are printed on your invoice so you can look them up yourself.

$135
an hour for labour, on every job.
List price
for parts. If you would rather bring your own, ask us first.
12 months
or 12,000 miles on our work, whichever comes first. That is our own shop policy: if a repair we did fails in that time, we put it right.

How a work order goes here

  1. We look

You tell us what it is doing. We drive it, lift it and find the cause.

  2. We call you

With a price and photos of what we found, before we touch anything.

  3. You say yes or no

Take your time. No is a fine answer, and you only owe the diagnosis.

  4. We fix only what you approved

If we find something else on the way, we stop and call again.

  5. You get the old parts back

If you want them. Say so when you approve the work.
